Family Friendly River Cruise in Europe: Choosing the River
Rhine castles, Danube Ferris wheels and Dutch windmills.
Get Free Family River Cruise QuotesA family friendly river cruise Europe-style depends as much on the river as on the ship. These are the routes that tend to keep children curious from embarkation to the last day.
The Rhine: Castles and Chocolate
The Rhine between Basel and Amsterdam packs a lot in. The Middle Rhine gorge has a castle on almost every hilltop — Marksburg above Braubach is famous for never having been destroyed — and the legend of the Lorelei rock makes a good bedtime story. Rüdesheim has a museum of mechanical musical instruments that delights all ages, and Cologne has a chocolate museum beside the river. Our sister site Rhine Riverboat Cruises covers the route in full.
The Danube: Ferris Wheels, Bikes and Baths
From Passau, where three rivers meet, to Budapest, the Danube offers big-city fun and countryside freedom. Vienna has the Prater amusement park and its historic giant Ferris wheel, plus the zoo at Schönbrunn Palace, the oldest still operating in the world. The Wachau Valley has a cycle path along the river, Bratislava has quirky bronze street statues to find, and Budapest’s thermal baths are a treat for every age. For the full Danube picture, see Danube Riverboat Cruises.
Holland and Belgium: Windmills and Easy Days
The Dutch and Belgian waterways have short distances, flat cycling, canal boats and the windmills of Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an easy, open-air outing for young children. Spring sailings coincide with tulip season, which can line up with Easter breaks. Holland River Cruising explains these routes and the tulip-time sailings.
Rivers to Save for Later
Some routes suit older children best: the Douro in Portugal has steep hillside walking and a strong wine focus, and the lower Danube involves longer coach rides. They are wonderful trips, just better once the children are teenagers.

France With Children
France’s rivers are usually thought of as adult trips, but that is changing. Uniworld added family departures in Burgundy and Provence for 2026 and has said they will return in 2027, with Roman ruins in Arles, the bridge at Avignon and food stops along the way. These are best for school-age children who enjoy history and food, and they make a good choice for families who have already sailed the Rhine or Danube.
