Family River Cruises: How the Programs Compare
Dedicated family departures, regular sailings and charters explained.
Get Free Family River Cruise QuotesFamily river cruises in Europe come in two flavors: special family departures with youth programming, and regular sailings that simply allow children. Here is how the main options compare.
Dedicated Family River Cruise Programs
| Program | Ships | What makes it family-focused |
|---|---|---|
| Adventures by Disney | AmaWaterways | Adventures by Disney guides travel with the group; activities on board for young “Junior Adventurers”; Rhine and Danube routes, with updates announced for 2027 sailings. |
| Tauck Bridges | Tauck river ships | Family river cruises such as the Blue Danube and Castles on the Rhine in summer, plus a December holiday sailing on the Danube. |
| Uniworld Generations Collection | Uniworld ships | Family hosts with separate programs for children and teens on selected departures, recently on the Danube, the Rhine and in France. |
Each program runs on selected dates only, not on every departure of the ship. That is the most common surprise for families: the same itinerary a week later may have no youth program at all.
Regular Sailings That Welcome Children
Outside the family programs, many lines accept children on ordinary departures, subject to their own minimum ages and rules about adults sharing a cabin. You will usually find only a few children on board, no special activities and adult-oriented excursions — which suits families with older, independent children who enjoy history and food. Guided bike tours and active excursions, offered by several lines, are often the hit of the trip for teenagers.
The one major exception is Viking: its river cruises are for adults 18 and over. If you are traveling with anyone younger, look elsewhere.

How to Choose Between Them
- Children under about ten: a dedicated family sailing almost always works better, because the activities and guides are designed for them.
- Tweens and teens: either option can work; ask about bikes, active tours and how many other teens are likely to sail.
- Three generations: a family program keeps the youngest busy while grandparents set their own pace.
- Large groups: consider booking a block on one departure or a charter through Group River Cruises.

Family Program Questions
Is Adventures by Disney the same as a Disney cruise?
No. Adventures by Disney is Disney’s guided-vacation brand. Its European river sailings run on AmaWaterways ships, with Adventures by Disney guides and family activities on board and ashore. There are no Disney characters or theme-park attractions on the ship.
Can I book a family program and still have adult time?
Yes. Family programs typically include some kids-only or teens-only activities, which gives parents and grandparents time for a wine tasting or a quiet dinner. Ask how many such sessions the sailing includes.
Are family sailings more expensive?
They can be, because of the extra guides and activities, but children’s fares and offers vary a great deal. We never quote fares here; our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise will show you current pricing side by side.
